Choosing the greatest athletes in history is necessarily subjective. But when I think about greatness, I don’t just look at trophies. I also value impact, longevity, dominance and ability to impress. Some names are obvious, others create debate. You will find out who, in my opinion, really changed the face of sport.
1. Muhammad Ali – Boxing

Impossible not to start with him. Ali is the living legend who has become a symbol.
World champion at 22 years old, three-time heavyweight title, he challenged politics, conventions and his adversaries with a unique confidence.
His phrase «Flies like a butterfly, stings like a bee» sums it all up: elegance, power and charisma. His impact goes far beyond boxing.
2. Skin – Soccer

The “King” of football scored more than 1,000 goals, won three World Cups and amazed the world with his technical fluidity.
Pelé is the birth of modern football, the most popular sport in the world. He put Brazil on the world sporting map and remains a model of humility despite his global glory.
3. Michele Giordano – Basketball

With six NBA titles, two Olympic gold medals and an incomparable aura, Jordan is the absolute reference in basketball.
His killer mentality, his aerial style and his sense of grip have made him a sporting icon, far beyond the pitch. In my eyes, this is the perfect example of mental and physical dominance.
4. Serena Williams – Tennis

More than twenty Grand Slam singles titles, exceptional longevity and unparalleled power.
Serena redefined women’s tennis. He broke barriers, imposed a unique style and inspired entire generations. Few sportswomen have had such an impact on their discipline.
5. Usain Bolt – Athletics

The fastest sprinter in history. His records in the 100 and 200 meters still stand and his charisma has given a new face to athletics.
Bolt didn’t just win: he dominated with disconcerting ease, while maintaining a relaxed style that wowed the world.
6. Lionel Messi – Soccer

Seven Ballon d’Ors, titles galore and a World Cup won in 2022.
Messi is finesse, creativity, vision of the game. It makes football simple and magical at the same time. His influence goes beyond statistics, he embodies the romance of the game.
7. Michael Phelps – I swim

With 23 Olympic gold medals, Phelps is the most decorated athlete in the history of the Games.
His demands, his discipline and his dominance for more than a decade command admiration. He turned swimming into a global spectacle.
8. Diego Maradona – Soccer

An unpredictable genius, Maradona is a pure legend.
His goal against England in 1986 – followed by the “Hand of God” – embodies his entire style: pure talent, audacity and permanent contradiction. He single-handedly brought Naples and Argentina to the top.
9. Roger Federer – Tennis

Federer is grace personified on the court. Twenty Grand Slam titles, rare technical elegance and impressive longevity.
What I admire about him is his ability to evolve with the times, to remain humble while reigning over the world of tennis.
10. Tom Brady – American football

Seven Super Bowl titles, a career spanning more than twenty years and exceptional consistency.
Brady is tactical intelligence, rigor and a mind of steel. He redefined what was expected of a quarterback and still inspires an entire generation of athletes.
My opinion on this ranking
I know some names can spark debate. Where are Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiger Woods, Martina Navratilova, LeBron James? The choice is difficult, because each discipline has its icons.
But I wanted to highlight the profiles that not only dominated their sport, but transcended it. Those whose name is known, even by people who have never followed their discipline.
Conclusion
The greatest athletes of all time don’t just win. They inspire, break codes and leave a lasting impression. Each in their own way, the ten I have chosen have made this sport legendary. And you, who would you put at the top of your own ranking?
