Luca Zidane’s transfer from France to Algeria

Luca Zidane's transfer from France to Algeria

Son of a French legend, a man revered as a World Cup winner, an emblem of a nation and one of the greatest footballers the world has known. But Marseille-born Luca Zidane, son of Zinedine Zidane, will never represent the Blues at senior level after switching his national allegiance to Algeria.

The 27-year-old Granada goalkeeper, who has played regularly for France’s youth teams, had his request to play for Vladimir Petkovic’s team approved by FIFA on Friday.

«FIFA has officially granted goalkeeper Luca Zinedine Zidane permission to represent the Algerian national team,» read a statement from the Algerian Football Federation.

Zidane is able to go to Algeria thanks to his paternal grandparents, Smaïl and Malika, who left the village of Taguemount Azouz in northern Algeria in 1953 to start a new life in France, first in Paris and then in Marseille.

Like father, like son

The move, which came after Zidane was not called up to the senior squad, means he could still follow in his father’s footsteps by playing at the World Cup.

Algeria will face Somalia in a qualifying match next month and is expected to qualify for the finals in North America next summer with a match in hand.

Although Algeria is officially designated as the host team, the match will take place in Algiers due to security concerns and Somalia’s lack of a FIFA-approved stadium.

«When I play I’m Luca, not Zidane»

Should Zidane participate, it would be another intriguing chapter in a career that began in Real Madrid’s youth ranks, where he progressed from the youth team to the reserve team, Castilla, before making his professional debut in May 2018 under the guidance of his father, who had taken the reins at the Bernabeu almost two and a half years earlier.

«When I play, I’m Luca, not Zidane,» he said after conceding two late goals in the 2-2 draw against Villarreal. “The day before, my dad told me, and he told me to enjoy the moment, that it’s an honor to play with the best in the world.”

Zidane, the second of four brothers, struggled to capitalize on this promising start, making just one more appearance for the club before moving on loan to Rayo Vallecano the following season. He moved to Segunda Division club Eibar in 2022, before moving to Granada last summer.

Born in France and trained in Spain, Zidane will now have the chance to write another chapter in his nomadic career.

conclusion

The story of Luca Zidane choosing to represent Algeria is more than a simple administrative change—it is a symbolic moment that connects football, heritage, and identity. Born in Marseille and long associated with France’s youth teams, the Granada goalkeeper has now officially committed his international future to Algeria after FIFA approved his switch.

Being the son of Zinedine Zidane inevitably shaped expectations. A World Cup winner in 1998 and one of the most revered figures in French sporting history, Zidane senior represents the pinnacle of French football identity. Yet Luca’s decision illustrates how modern footballers increasingly navigate dual heritage with autonomy and personal conviction.

Thanks to his paternal grandparents, Smaïl and Malika—who left Taguemount Azouz in 1953 to settle in France—Luca qualifies to represent Algeria. Their journey from northern Algeria to Marseille laid the foundation for a story that now comes full circle. In choosing Algeria, he honors a branch of his family history that predates his father’s global fame.

For Algeria, under the guidance of Vladimir Petković, the addition of a goalkeeper with European top-flight experience strengthens competition within the squad. For France, it marks the end of any lingering speculation about a senior call-up.

Ultimately, this decision is not about rejecting one nation for another, but about embracing identity in its entirety. In a sport increasingly shaped by globalization and migration, Luca Zidane’s choice reflects the complex, intertwined histories that define modern football.
