Last week was the scene of many matches, an opportunity at the end of the season to take stock of truly surprising numbers and statistics.
OM and OL good, bad interpreters
The last day of Ligue 1 was difficult for the top of the table. Strasbourg win, Monaco win, Lyon was obliged to win against Lens but they couldn’t. In this meeting, Gones supporters expressed their frustration with the feverishness of their defense and the lack of realism of their offensives. Unfortunately it is difficult to deny them, given that Opta announces the highest number of balls hit in Ligue 1 without managing to finish off the opponent, a scenario that recalls RC Lens’s victory against OM.

The OM is talking about it. Olympique Marseille faced LOSC this weekend and, if they lost, we would find the Marseilles in a terrible position. To face them, Lille made a phenomenal run in the Champions League, with resources and a crowd on fire that evening. Yet OM was not unworthy, author of a serious and diligent match, the Focesi had to win but they achieved something classic for them this season. Yet another ball that offers an opportunistic point to LOSC, for the eleventh time of the season (yes, eleven….), Marseille gives a goal to their opponent. Geronimo Rulli completely misses the restart and leaves his cage free to be pulled.
Winning and losing in England
Let’s start from a first somewhat curious fact, the three clubs that have arrived in the Premier League are now certain of falling into the Championship. Leicester, Southampton and Ipswich will certainly play in the lower division, but what about those who have to move up? Will Burnley be in the match (again), the club that shuttles between the two championships managed to score the record of 100 points, enough to offer them the title? Not exactly. For the first time in its history, the Championship sees two clubs rise to this symbolic level. Leeds United maintain top spot, thanks to an average of 65 goals, and there is no doubt that these two newly promoted players who have dominated the competition have not been unworthy. In place of the simpleton we find Sheffield United who could have a tough time with third place despite having 90 points on the clock..
We are still in the Championship and this time we are looking at the bottom of the table. There is a big surprise: Luton Town, who were still playing in the Premier League last season, are reaching the bottom of the second division. This club that has been able to work miracles will finally experience a second relegation and will play in the third division next season.
If Luton Town have achieved the feat of double relegation, another record has been broken and this one promises to be more glorious. Small club AFC Wrexham have managed to do it three times in a row, a dream for any Football Manager player. The club in which actor Ryan Reynolds invested €2 million has grown enormously in value and is now worth more than €100 million. Will they be able to get their fourth promotion?
The final stretch of the Ligue 1 season always delivers tension, but last week condensed drama into pure statistical irony. While Strasbourg and Monaco secured crucial victories, the spotlight fell heavily on Olympique Lyonnais and Olympique de Marseille—two clubs capable of brilliance, yet undone by inefficiency.
OM and OL: Good, Bad Interpreters
Lyon entered their clash against RC Lens knowing that only a win would keep their ambitions intact. Instead, frustration echoed around the stadium. Defensive fragility and attacking wastefulness combined into a performance that symbolized their inconsistency this season. Supporters voiced their discontent, particularly regarding the back line’s nervousness under pressure and the forwards’ inability to convert promising situations.
The numbers reinforce the eye test. According to data provider Opta Sports, Lyon recorded one of the highest totals of balls played into dangerous zones in Ligue 1 without successfully capitalizing. Dominance without incision—a recurring narrative. It’s a scenario reminiscent of Lens’s earlier triumph over Marseille, where efficiency trumped territorial control.
